Normal Modesto BART Express departure times are 5:45pm and 6:30pm; but if trains are running late, drivers will wait up to ten (10) minutes past the scheduled departure times.  Seating

Gray Line

·       Seat Reservations:  Monthly pass holders will make their reservations for seating on the morning and afternoon bus for which they have a pass.  On a space available basis only, monthly pass holders may also ride on the bus in which they do not have reserved seating.

·       Morning Seating:  On the morning trips to Dublin, the first priority for boarding will be pass holders with reservations on that bus followed by pass holders who usually ride the other morning bus.  It does not matter if the non-pass holders are purchasing one-way or round-trip tickets, they will board on a first-come, first-served basis.

·       Seating Priorities:  Seats of pass holders who have not arrived five (5) minutes before the bus is scheduled to leave in the morning will be assumed to be vacant and available for use by non-pass holders.  If the pass holder boards the bus within five (5) minutes of departure and their reserved seat has been taken, the pass holder will be allowed to sit in any unoccupied seat, or stand.  Early arrival is not required on afternoon buses.  MAX will not assume a pass holder will not be returning on the bus that evening because they did not ride the bus to the BART station in the morning.  Therefore, there will always be room on the afternoon bus for pass holders even if they arrive late in the morning or only ride in the afternoon.

·       Afternoon Seating:  On the afternoon return trips from Dublin, the first priority for boarding will be pass holders with reservations on that bus followed by pass holders who usually ride the other afternoon bus.  Passengers with round-trip tickets will be boarded next, and one-way ticket purchasers will be required to wait to see if there are enough spaces (seats or standing room) to accommodate them on the bus before they are sold a ticket.

HOW TO BUY A BART TICKET

gray line
  • Each person must have a ticket. Children 4 and under ride free when accompanied by an adult, and do not need a ticket.

  • Check the fare chart above for your destination and cost of your trip.

  • Go to a ticket machine and purchase your ticket. Some machines provide change. Others do not. Signs on the machines indicate which ones will give change.  No machines will give more than $4.95 in change. Ticket machines will accept nickels, dimes and quarters as well as $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills. If your bill is not accepted, turn it upside down and try again.

  • Take your ticket and insert it in the fare gate. The ticket will be returned to you. You must use the same ticket when exiting at your destination.

HOW TO USE YOUR BART TICKET

gray line

Insert your ticket into the fare gate. It will code your ticket, open for entry, and return your ticket. Save your ticket; you must use it the same way to exit. Upon exiting, the fare gate will deduct your fare. If you have fare remaining, your ticket will be returned to you by the exit gate. If your ticket does not cover the cost of the ride, your ticket will be returned and a sign on the gate will light up and indicate “Underpaid Go To Add-fare.”  The add-fare machine tells you how much additional fare you must pay.

To add fare:

  • Insert ticket.  Amount owed for exit will be displayed.

  • Insert exact amount.  (Some add-fare machines are equipped to give change, others are not.)

  • Ticket is automatically updated and returned but the new printed value will not show on the ticket.

  • Take your ticket and insert in exit gate.

Note: Add-fare machines must be used at exit station only. You cannot upgrade a ticket to a value greater than the trip cost at the add-fare machine.
